Quale sarà il futuro energetico della Terra? La soluzione ai problemi energetici dell'uomo potrebbe davvero arrivare dallo spazio? L’umanità è di fronte a una svolta: non più di 100 anni ci separano dall’esaurimento delle riserve di combustibili fossili. Rimangono dunque pochi decenni per costruire un’alternativa valida, e che vedrà probabilmente un notevole contributo delle fonti rinnovabili, rivelatesi già concorrenziali con il petrolio e che in Paesi come l’Austria coprono il 60% del fabbisogno di elettricità. Resta più incerto il contributo che potrà arrivare dall’energia nucleare, combattuta da molti per le ben note questioni legate alla sicurezza e allo stoccaggio delle scorie, questioni almeno in parte superabili con la realizzazione di impianti di nuova generazione e con il riciclaggio delle scorie. Tuttavia, rimarrebbero sul tappeto problemi non meno importanti quali il rischio di proliferazione degli ordigni bellici e l’esorbitante costo dello smantellamento degli impianti al termine del ciclo di operatività. Una prospettiva affascinante, anche se non praticabile sul breve periodo, è quella della fusione nucleare, inesauribile e "pulita", per la quale sono stati avviati gli esperimenti europei ITER e JET, e che potrebbe avere un risvolto fantascientifico: lo sfruttamento dei giacimenti di elio-3 (un combustibile possibile per la fusione) scoperti sulla Luna.

Che cosa emette più radioattività nell'atmosfera: una centrale nucleare o una centrale termica? Una centrale termica. Che cosa comporta maggior rischio: vivere nei pressi di una centrale nucleare o fumare una sigaretta? Fumare una sola sigaretta equivale al rischio di vivere due anni vicino a una centrale nucleare. Che cosa si fa in un'ora di punta di richiesta energetica se non soffia il vento? Si ricorre a impianti di pompaggio o centrali a gas di riserva. L'energia elettrica non può essere immagazzinata. Quanti aerogeneratori servono per sostituire una centrale nucleare? Circa duemila, dell'ultima generazione. Separati tra di loro dei cinquecento metri necessari perché siano efficienti, la fila dei mulini si estenderebbe da Barcellona a Ginevra, attraversando l'intera Francia. È un errore contrapporre tra loro le energie alternative, sarebbe molto più sensato considerarle alleate nella grande battaglia contro un Signore Oscuro ogni giorno più potente: il cambiamento climatico, che potrebbe benissimo annientare, nel giro di uno o due secoli, la nostra cara e malconcia regione globalizzata.

Educazione, innovazione, conoscenza, creatività, ricerca scientifica e didattica. Ecco alcuni dei pilastri culturali che sostengono il progetto degli Stage a Tor Vergata, destinato a studentesse e studenti del IV e V anno della scuola secondaria di secondo grado. Trenta studenti, meritevoli ma soprattutto motivati, vengono inseriti per cinque giorni e in due distinte fasi formative, in tre gruppi di ricerca, del Dipartimento di Fisica dell'Università di Roma Tor Vergata, attivi in settori d'avanguardia della scienza dei materiali e dei materiali innovativi per l'astrofisica sperimentale. Per cinque giorni "vivono" nei laboratori di ricerca, esplorano e apprendono le più recenti novità e tecnologie nella ricerca di materiali innovativi per lo sviluppo dell'ICT (Information and Communication Technology), della conversione fotovoltaica e dell'astrofisica dello spazio. Lavorano in piccoli gruppi, guidati da docenti universitari, identificano gli obiettivi a cui giungere, si distribuiscono incarichi e responsabilità, si confrontano, organizzano, gestiscono e presentano le fasi della ricerca tenendo in considerazione la teoria di riferimento.
